about

"Keys to friendship" is the story of an encounter that is as remarkable as it is moving. It is the story of two people, two pianists, who would probably not find each other in this grotesquely polarised world, but who met, became friends and ultimately inspired each other - through their music.

It is a manifesto about reaching out the hand of friendship and discovering the parallels between Arab and European culture. The lullaby Nami brings hopeful calm and contemplation with its wonderful lightness. Green Peppermint, Aeham Ahmad's dark and personal memoir of his life before and during the war, concludes with a wish for peace to return soon. Fog En Nachel is based on jazz harmonies and offers generous solo opportunities for both pianists. It is another masterful product of Edgar Knecht's imagination. And for those who, after enjoying this disc, shake their heads and wonder why our media environment keeps stirring up fears of the foreign, Keys to Friendship of course already has the answer ready: there is no "them" and "us" or an "axis of evil", there is only us. And the key to friendship is to treat each other with courtesy and respect. Aeham Ahmad and Edgar Knecht have found this key in their shared enthusiasm for music - and in the music they share, which both inspires and deeply moves us.
